About the director

I moved to Kremmling from Sunriver, Oregon where I was teaching music in the public schools and also teaching life skills, nature, and recovery at a wilderness recovery ranch for drug addicted teenagers.

I spent a couple of years before that playing Saxophone, Clarinet and Flute in the showband, jazz combo and big band on several cruise ships which took me to many places in the world - the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas and the Carnival Fascination.  Cruise ship productions were a lot of fun, musically challenging and the musicians and entertainers I worked with were amazing.

After getting my Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and Performance at Washington State University I became a United States Marine and taught saxophone, clarinet and flute at the Armed Forces School of Musician Virginia Beach Virginia.  I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and earned a Masters Degree in Music, studying Saxophone and Jazz.  My first public school teaching assignment was in the small town of Wallace, Idaho. Combining the towns of Wallace, Silverton and Osburn, the school district had a total population of around 2000.  I also taught band in the 2nd largest high school in the state of Washington with a championship marching band program and a total music program which won a grammy award.

Throughout my 20+ year career in education I have made choices based on what is important to me... my family, nature, rural life, and of course deer, elk, and other wild things - and so that is why I am back in Colorado, living in this area particularly and striving to provide the best possible music experience for the students in the West Grand School District.

I am happy to be living in Kremmling, and even more pleased that I have students who have demonstrated such great potential and enthusiasm for music.  2010-2011 was very successful, but we still have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.  I expect great things from these outstanding young people.

Mrs. Gumnick • Special Education

My name is Katie Heine, and I am happy to be working as the middle school special education teacher at West Grand Middle School. I recently relocated from Denver with my family of one human, named Marc, and two dogs - Rufus and Ananta. We are absolutely thrilled to be living and working in Kremmling and feel blessed every time we look out our windows at the amazing mountains. I love to be outside for any reason, whether I'm working on our new house, hiking or just playing with the pups. I also enjoy seeing live music, eating delicious food, creating mosaics, cooking and traveling. I have a large family in Kentucky, including 2 (soon to be 3) young nephews, and I get back to visit as often as I can.

I have worked as a special education teacher for the last three years in both Aurora and Englewood, CO. I have Bachelor's Degrees in Communication Disorders (Speech Therapy) and Education, and I'm currently working to earn my Masters Degree in Special Education through UC Denver online courses. I believe that the more people a student has invested in a their education, the more likely they are to succeed. I love to stay in contact with the parents of each student, so please feel free to call or email me anytime so we can work together to get the most out of your child's education. I really love being a teacher, and I can't wait to work with the students and families of WGMS!
