December Classroom News

Math:

6th Grade:  We are multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals.  We will also be introduced to ratios.

7th Grade:  We are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers.  

8th Grade:  We are adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in scientific notation.  We will also be introduced to one variable linear equations.

Dates to Remember:  
Class Expectations Quiz - 12/3
Chapter Quiz 12/10
Unit Test 12/17

Reminders:   Students need to come to class prepared, take notes (write down everything on the board), use math talk only, and stay on task.

Science:

6th Grade:  We are studying rocks and minerals.

7th Grade:  We are studying volcanoes and will soon be moving on to a unit on cells.

8th Grade:  We are studying work and power and will soon be moving on to thermal energy

Upcoming Projects:  
8th grade- Rube Goldberg machines are due on Thursday 12/3
7th grade- Have to build 3D cells the week of the 12/14
Science fair- Students who are participating in science fair need to have completed their experiments when they come back from winter break.

Dates to Remember:  Science Fair is January 28th at the high school

Social Studies:

6th Grade:  We are studying Central and South America

7th Grade:  We are learning about the origins of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in the ancient world.

8th Grade:  We are learning about the creation of our (the United States of America) government after we gained our independence from Britain.

Upcoming Projects: 
6th and 8th Grades- We are currently working on menu style project boards.  Projects should be turned in as completed.  All projects are due by December 17th.
7th grade research class - Judging will occur shortly after we return to school after Winter Break.  Please, let me know via email if 
you have an interest in helping with the judging process.  

Dates to Remember:  
Our second Brain Bowl meet is Friday, December 11, 2015 in Walden at 9:00 am.  The bus will leave the middle school at 6:45 am. 
Students need to be at the school by 6:30 am.

Reading:

6th Grade:  We are working on comprehension of nonfiction text, text annotation, and using textual evidence when explaining our answers to 
comprehension questions.  We are also working on our latin roots review unit.

8th Grade:  We are doing a virtual (online) tour of Ellis Island in which we read, view, and listen to primary sources.  We are annotating sources, 
answering comprehension questions, and responding in our reading response journals.  We are also working on our latin roots review unit.

Vocabulary Review Test Units 5-7 - Wednesday Dec. 16th

Reminders:  
Every student needs to have a book to read in class every day.
Winter break is a great time to touch base with your child about school supplies.  Please replenish if needed.

Language Arts:  

6th Grade:  We are focusing on paragraph writing with varying sentence structures, spelling, and grammar practice.

7th Grade:  We are focusing on paragraph writing with varying sentence structures, spelling, and grammar practice.

8th Grade:  We are focusing on essay writing with well-developed paragraphs and varying sentence structures, spelling, and grammar practice.

Technology Class:

All Classes:  6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have been working in Code.org.   Code.org is a blockly style coding technique.  It is an easy way to be introduced to the world of computer programming.  Students have been putting their math skills to the test solving computer based problems.  Group problem solving has been promoted to learn basic group dynamics to problem solving.

Art:  

6th Grade - Students are currently studying low-relief sculptures. Students will be studying low relief sculpture artist like Edward Sheffield Bartholomew. Students will be creating their own low-relief sculptures using string, cardboard, glue, tin foil, and sharpies.

7th Grade- Students are currently working on color theory. As a class the students discussed different emotions that viewers feel when looking at certain colors. Student's’ paired in groups to look at famous artwork from America to discuss why each artist used the colors they used. Students will be creating an adjective that describes them using color theory and design to create that adjective. 

8th Grade - Students are learning about the Pop Art movement and relief printmaking. Students looked at and discussed artists that worked in the pop art style. As a class students have discussed what is considered popular culture in their world. Students will use relief printing; a printmaking technique, to create their pop art final. 

Physical Education:

6th Grade - Floor Hockey (rules, and strategies) 

7th Grade - Floor Hockey (rules, strategies, and game play) 

8th Grade - Floor Hockey (rules, strategies, and game play) 

Reminders:  Have all your children come to school with gym clothes so they can dress out and participate.  (gym shoes, shorts/sweats, t-shirt)


Band:

6th Grade - The 6th grade band is working on new music for the winter concert December 16 at 7:00 pm in the West Grand High School Auditorium.  Selections include “Jingle Bells”, “Jolly Old St. Nicholas” and “Up On The Housetop”.

7th Grade - The 7th grade band is working on music for the winter concert December 16 at 7:00 pm in the West Grand High School Auditorium.  Selections include “Bandissimo”, “Dubble Bubble” and “The Little Drummer Boy”.

8th Grade - The 8th grade band is working on music for the winter concert December 16 at 7:00 pm in the West Grand High School Auditorium. They will be performing along with the 7th grade band as well as with the High School Band. Selections with the High School Band include “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”, “Winter Holiday” and “Radioactive”.

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society food drive was once again a success this year.  Thank you parents and students for all your donations and help. Congratulations goes to the 8th grade for donating the most non-perishable food items. The class will be receiving a pizza party the last week before December break. The exact day and time will be announced to students.

Other NJHS news - the group will be walking to Cliffview Assisted Living Center Monday, December 7, 2015 to spread holiday cheer and help decorate Christmas trees.
